History of Kokikai Aikido

Maruyama Sensei

Kokikai Aikido was founded in 1986 by Shuji Maruyama Sensei.

Maruyama Sensei started his practice of Aikido in 1953 under Koichi Tohei Sensei, who was the most senior and head instructor under Aikido’s founder Morihei Ueshiba. Later, with an introduction from Tohei Sensei,  Maruyama studied directly under Ueshiba as his uchi deshi (esteemed apprentice).

In 1966 Maruyama Sensei was invited by the Cleveland Judo Club to teach in the United States. Two years later he moved to Philadelphia to open his own dojo in Center City and later a second dojo in Northeast Philadelphia. Since that time Kokikai has grown significantly as students have fanned out from Philadelphia and opened Kokikai dojos throughout the United States.  In 1982 Sensei Maruyama moved back to Japan so he could take his experience to his homeland. Kokikai has grown internationally with dojos across the globe all tracing their beginnings to Maruyama Sensei.
